Othello (cat) was going out of his way, waking up the dog time and again this morning, just to be annoying, lol. He would meow his "leave me alone!" meow, while Faith was sound asleep on the floor. Faith would pop up, and sniff him, and Othello would act all ticked off - - but I truly believe Othello was BORED and wanted to bug the heck out of Faith, hahahaha.

After a while, I heard them both in the kitchen. Othello was just laying there, and Faith was soooooooo happy and excited - but she was CALM with him, since HE wasn't running. If the cat doesn't run, there's nothing to chase!

Faith was trying SO hard to make Othello run. She wanted to PLAY with him. She would get down... get up.... do the 'play pose'... get down... get up.

Othello had a look on his face that said, "You can buzz RIGHT off!" hahaha

Finally, Faith gave up, and just plopped down on the floor, and layed as close to him as he would allow:

I think, as time goes on, these two are going to be good buddies. I never thought it was possible for the first several months after we got Faith.

Last week I was walking Connor and ran into a woman I've met before with her dog. We were talking and out of the blue she points to Connor and says, "You should 'down' him so he learns who's boss." "He doesn't need to be downed." "They have to learn who's boss." She wouldn't stop going on about it.

Today a bunch of dogs met up on a walk. The dogs were milling around greeting each other. Connor was behaving fine but this guy says to me, "You should get a Gentle Leader for him." "He doesn't need it." "You should get one. My dog's trainer said those buckle collars are not good for their necks." "Connor isn't a puller." "It doesn't matter. Those collars aren't good for them." Then he is going to give Connor a treat so he DOES ask him to sit which is good but then he keeps saying, "Stay. Stay. Stay." That is not the appropriate command and he shouldn't be repeating it. As we all walked down the street, I stopped Connor on the corner and asked him to sit. He usually does it automatically but sometimes with other dogs, he'll need the command. "That's hard to teach them," the guy says. "He knows to sit at the corner." "By himself?" "Yes." "I just think of my dogs as pets." What does THAT mean?

I don't want to be rude to these people but SHUT UP! I'm not asking for your advice, you have no business telling me how to train my dog and frankly, your dog isn't as well behaved as mine but I don't tell you what to do. I ignore these people's advice and try to let it just wash off but it really irritates me when they start ' training' (and confusing) my dog!

I don't understand why this keeps happening. It's not like Connor is racing around, pulling and jumping. He's very well behaved - especially for a six month old puppy. A a very big puppy, too!

How do you handle situations like this?

Connor had a big day yesterday. Long walk/run in the morning, trip to the vet's for a rabies shot, (he weighs 67.6 pounds!), visit at my sister's, long traffic jam on the way home then a 20 minute break until we had to jump back into the car for obedience class. He could barely stay awake to eat his dinner, then into his pen at 8:30. He slept like a rock until 5:00 this morning.

I had to work at 6:30 this morning so we were out at 5:30 after his breakfast. He was behaving fine until we got to the park where I let him off leash. He raced around for awhile always keeping me in sight.

Then he decided it was time for play and bounded up behind me, knocking my leg and almost knocking ME over. That was just the beginning. He started chasing and jumping and nipping at me. When I went to put his leash on he kept nipping at me (I won't say 'bite' but it hurt enough that I cried out a couple of times.). He even growled at one point. I have NEVER heard Connor growl - even in play. I think that's all it was but it surprised me. I ordered him to sit and he did but popped back up and started again. I finally grabbed him by his jowls, lifted him up, shook him (gently), looked into his eyes and said, "Stop that. NOW." Then I made him sit/stay for a minute and gave him the heel command. He walked fine then. By the time we got home he knew he'd displeased me and was quiet and well behaved. Of course I did the no-touch, no-talk, no-eye contact thing once I got him under control.

Was this just puppy hijinx, rough play or the beginning of his adolescent challenge period? Any suggestions on how to deal with him when he gets out of control like that? I try ignoring him but that's hard when he's jumping at you, nipping and grabbing the leash out of your hand!

How much panting does your dog do?

The end of July when Jake had a rash on his leg that he was licking at and it became infected the vet put him on CEPHALEXIN 500 MG. , 2 capsules, twice a day for 10 days. I did question that MG and number of times and it was correct. I checked the side effects and it did say he would drink more water and it would cause him to pant. So for those 10 days I saw him do this and the sore on his leg healed. I then took him in for his yearly shots which was the middle of August he had an ear infection and I was told to put Panalog cream in the ears twice a day for 10 days, which I did. The end of August I felt Jake was still panting more than usual so I took him back to the vet at which time he was given another very thorough going over, checked ears, mouth, lungs, heart, and she told me he was doing excellent and that the bloodwork I had done earlier in the month came back great. So, she really thought for a while and since both the antibiotic and the panalog cream had steroids in them she considered that maybe he was having a reaction to that. So, I was to take him off the panalog cream and the tablets I give him for his coat and joints and if the panting stopped to introduce them back into his system one at a time to see if we could figure what is causing it. By the 5th day I thought that maybe he was not panting as much, I am constantly listening to how much he is panting. He does not pant when he is laying down, only when he is sitting up. Now I am beginning to question myself if I am reading too much into this. On top of it all we had storms yesterday and today with thunder and Jake doesn't like storms and he has always gotten anxious and panted when a storm is coming so I had to take that into consideration. So when the vet's office called me today to check on him I told them I wanted to watch him over the weekend to make sure what is going on. She said they would call me back on Tuesday to check again. Sorry this is so long but it really is bothering me. Also because he is scheduled to have the tag removed on September 14th and I want to make sure nothing is wrong with him. Thanks for listening.

I am going to do some Internet reserach as well, but Faith has what looks like 2 hotspots forming on her tummy area. She is in the water EVERY single day in this heat, and I am certain that no matter how much I dry her, she is left a little wet in some areas, inadvertantly.

We noticed a rather large (just smaller than a dime) raised red area on her tummy yesterday, and another symmetrical smaller one on the other side. My hubby wonders if her skin rubs together there when she walks? But whatever the case, I am wondering if there might be a simple home-remedy to help these areas heal, without needing to do the costly vet run at the vet office that I HATE.

I thought about Polysporin... but I know my Faith - she'd think it was a snack and lick it all off, lol.

Any one know of any simple ideas for hotspots? I will make SURE that that area is VERY dry from now on - even using the hair dryer on cool setting. Other than that - any ideas?

My Sam

Sam was a Golden Retriever, my breed of choice.

He was a rescue, a product of an unwanted home.

I rescued Sam two years ago, his former owner gave him up for dead, he had bad hips, couldn’t walk much anymore . God his teeth were awful.

At first I didn’t want him, an old dog with bad hips and really bad teeth, years of kibble, great food?
I thought it over for a weekend and called the rescue group back, I’ll take him if you can get him up here, Sam arrived 2 days later.

I changed his diet, gave him bones, and his teeth cleaned up in no time!

Sam was a silly old guy, always forgot why he had to go out to the backyard, the patio was a good place to go, I forgive him every time.

Sam had really bad hips, I’ll always remember his funny gait, but he never gave in to this, I had to give him a good boost into the Blazer every night for his much loved walk.

Sam was a gentleman – in the truest sense, my 2 years with him where the richest years of my life.

I will miss my boy when open the fridge door, Sam loved food, asparagus was his favorite.

Not that he loved the BBQ, and yes I spoiled him, a 15 yr old dog deserves the best does he not?

I will really miss his silly old face hanging over the baby gate as I came home each day to let them out, you see I always come home every day at lunch to let my guys out to do their business and to play.

Good dogs always get cookies, I made sure Sam got his, he was a good boy.

Sam came to me as a mess, I remember asking myself why I took him on?

But I found the right supp for him and he blossomed much like a flower does in spring, he became a new dog!

Sam never wanted to be left out of the pack, he tried his best to be with us no matter what we did, god I admire him for this, I always had to give him a boost into my Blazer so we could go to the park, he so loved being in the park, he had so many friends down there.

For being so old, I never witnessed the drive he had to be with us, to be a part of life that he had with us, for that was the life he so dearly wanted to be a part of.

God I miss him, I think his greatest achievement when he realized he could run again, the first time I saw him do this I broke down in tears.

Sam, I love you!

Came home from work yesterday afternoon and Cheyanne wasn't weight bearing on her front right paw, seemed Ok, checked it over but complained when I touch up her leg. Seemed to get better during the evening, and this am wasn't really limping at all. Got home a little while ago and again she's not weight bearing. Carmel wanted to play with her as I stood out in the rain waiting for them both to go potty, which Cheyanne didn't do, just laid on the wet grass. Tried taking them out again alittle while ago but Cheyanne just laid down. Wants to follow me around the house but is having trouble walking. Meanwhile Carmel is having loose stools and wants out frequently and Cheyanne wants to go with her.
Carmel did well, waiting for me to get home from work so she could go outside. So I've called the Vet's office and as soon as hubby gets home, will be taking Cheyanne over there. She's around 90 pounds so I can't lift in the car myself or out as I don't want her jumping up or down. I just hope its not caused by the Lyme disease, she doesn't get retested till Nov., as limping is one of the signs that the diesese is developing. She did just complete a month of antibiotics for the disease. While I'm there I will ask what to give Carmel for the loose stools, did have 2 yesterday after I got home. Normally I give Peptol but she really doesn't like it.

I pulled out all his old records, he has been suffering with a hyper thyroid since 2005 and we are now at the point that we put meds (a cream compound) into his ear because he cannot keep anything down. The vet said the last resort would be steriod shots ever two to three week (40.00/per shot) IF that works. Well he is even worse. He had his 1st shot on Aug 26th and since that has not kept any food down at all. Each time I feed him 40min later it all comes up. The other day it was so bad it was all down the stairs around the corner and all over the wall! Poor thing. I know what needs to be done and have come to peace with that... however my two boys are a different story. I will talk to my youngest son tomorrow when he comes home from camping.

Thank you again for your posts.
Susanne

PS He will be 15ys in Jan 2010. I have been feeding him 4 tiny meals a day and this still does not work.

Hi everyone!!

Well, Rylee turned 10 weeks old this past weekend. We've been camping a fair bit and trying to work on basic training. She now sits when told to and responds to her name (unless we're yelling at her!!). For the past 3 nights - she's slept in her crate the entire night - no middle of the night trips outside. During the day when she has to go out - she goes to the garden door and looks outside. Things are going really good.

We've had to retrofit the living room as she was getting underneath the furniture and chewing on speaker wires and phone cords so, the couch and loveseat no longer have legs - just easier than constantly yelling "NO". She loves eating rocks, sticks and grass so, camping with her has been an experience!!!! We just hope that it's just a stage and it will pass!

She's been on pepto for the past week because she's had the runs - we got her off her food and got her onto Orijin large breed puppy food so, we're not sure if it's that or the camping that's been affecting her. But, we took her to the vet on Thursday to get a new weight on her and she's already just over 15 pounds! She goes back to the vet this Friday for shots and heartworm medication.

We were camping at a provincial park just north of Winnipeg last week and on one of the walks out of nowhere came this older golden that looked exactly like Kira. She didn't come near us at first but, waited for her humans. They came to see Rylee and we got to spend time with an older golden that looked so much like Kira - it was awesome. Her name was Maddie and she was 9. She sat with her back to us and was sitting on our feet exactly like Kira used to - it was a really nice 1/2 hour that we spent visiting with them. Christine - I thought at first that it might be you but, the lady told me that this was her 3rd golden so, that ruled you out!

Here's some pics of our girl through the summer shenanigans!!!

I feed my pup Eukanuba Adult Maintenance. It is the food he's always been on, it was recommended by the breeder, he likes it and the vet says he's fit and healthy.

Every time I go into my local Pet Valu to buy the food they try and talk me out of it. Yesterday, I wanted to buy a big bag but they were out. The clerk asked if I found what I wanted and I told her I would prefer a big bag if they had one in the storeroom. She said, no, but she'd give me samples of another food. I told her I didn't want another food, that this one was fine. That the breeder recommended it...etc. She goes into the usual spiel about how it's not very good food and although it's expensive, it's mostly filler. I told her I was happy with it but she wouldn't stop telling me how Performatrim was better and the food I was buying wasn't good for him.

Finally, I said, "Why do you sell it if you're always going to try and talk me out of buying it?"

"We have to sell it."

What does THAT mean?

As I was leaving she was still trying to convince me I should buy a different food. I said, "I have to disagree with you but thanks anyway."

It's hard not to go on the defensive when someone is insinuating that you're not giving your dog proper nutrition. I'm am so tired of defending this food but why would I switch for no reason? And why does every clerk in the store do this? Do they get a kickback from Performatrim or something.

I'm at the point I'm going to drive out of my way to buy his food because I can't stand this constant struggle.

Anyone else have experiences like this?

My Christmas Gift

Two and a half years ago on Christmas Eve I received a phone call from our local Sobey’s in the river valley about a Golden Retriever they had seen running in their parking lot for 3 days now. Sine they knew I was a Golden nut could I help?

Being that the temps for the past week had been around minus 27 I quickly called a friend and we headed down to see if we could catch this boy.

Turns out he didn’t give us much problem, we were greeted by this sad looking boy laying on the front steps of someone’s house. He was quite cold and very tired looking, to my surprise he came quite willing with me and hopped in my Blazer. I rushed him home and discovered he had licked his pads raw trying to stay warm and his ears were frostbitten.

I spent a week getting him back to being a healthly Golden then I started looking for his former owner. Dylan (his given name from me) had no collar, no tags and no chip, I spent three months advertising him all over the city without luck then finally gave up, no one wanted him, so I figured I keep this fine gentle giant.

Dylan is very well trained, well mannered and no problem to care for, I simply could not believe how good this guy was and the fact that his former owners just dumped this very fine Golden made me see red.

Dylan was accepted by the others immediately and he accepted them immediately as well, they all play together like they’ve been friends forever, I still marvel in this today, he was just a breeze to bring into our home.

He’s a great ball player, putting on a nightly show at our off-leash shagging grounders, man is he good! He always attracts a crowd of fans that love to watch him play ball!

Dylan is a giant of a Golden, he’s the tallest Golden I’ve ever seen, he has a good two inches in height over the rest of my gang, yet he is the gentlest of Goldens, loves my little Max and had a great deal of respect for my silly old of then Golden Sam (15).

Sam was to leave us this past New Year’s eve after he had two Grand Mal seizures, I said my goodbyes to this wonderful old soul after two good years with him. I rescued him at 13.

I have no idea how old Dylan is? I put him at about 8 or 9 but who cares? He’s an incredible Golden and I have so much fun with him, two and half years ago I received the best Christmas present ever, my Dylan, a gift I treasure to this day!

I know this has nothing to do with goldens, but I do have a golden Tessa who is wonderful. I thought I might be able to get some advise as I am at my wits end and do not know where else to turn to for advise. Our cat Kramer is around 14 yrs old he belongs to my son who still lives at home and is 22yrs old. Kramer has a thyroid problem which he is on meds for but for at least the last 2ys has been vomiting a min of 2-3x a day. Guess who gets to clean up the mess? ME on carpet by the way we do not have hardwood and cannot at this time afford to put it in the whole house. Trust me we have been to the vets tons of times and leave with a not much we can do answer. They think he also might have the early stages of kidney troubles but do not know for sure. We have had tons of blood, x-ray etc. We have spent so much money on him.. it has been more than Tessa and she is 4 yrs old! The cat is way more work than the dog! You can imagine what my carpets look like, but I can't get them professionaly cleaned every month it is far to expensive. How much farther do I let this go? What kind of quality of life is this for Kramer? I don't know what to do, but it is very draining. My 2 adult boys and hubby say just to leave him alone and let him live out his remaining years. Trust me I have asked them to take turns with me with the clean up and it goes ok for the first month and then it is back to me full time. I work 3-4 days/week I do carpet clean up every time I come home from work.
Thanks for letting me vent, I welcome any ideas/thoughts good or bad any of you may have.
