The Delta Society is a United States based organization that oversees certification and visitation of therapy dogs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, and schools.

Recently, the Delta Society's Medical Advisory Board discussed the issue of therapy dogs that are fed a raw meat/protein diet. That board has voted to preclude animals eating raw protein foods from participating in Delta Society Pet Partners program by June 30, 2010.

The Canine Good Neighbour program was developed by the Canadian Kennel Club to identify and reward responsible, caring owners and their canine partners throughout Canada.

The test is non-competitive and allows dog and handler to demonstrate confidence and control in 12 steps. It assesses the handler and dog's relationship, together with the handler's ability to control the dog. Dogs are evaluated on their ability to perform basic exercises as well as their ability to demonstrate good manners in everyday situations.

Can you imagine being in a hospital or a living somewhere where you could not have your pets around you? This is the reality for many people, but thanks to the kindness of many volunteers, many hospital or retirement centre residents have had the benefit of visits from people with their pets. The medical profession has for many years widely acknowledged that petting and stroking pets can have a calming effect, lower blood pressure and relieve tension.
